Most hat damage doesn't happen on your head — it happens on a shelf, a hook, or worse, a flat surface. Resting a hat brim-down flattens and distorts the curl over time. Hanging it on a single nail puts uneven pressure on one side of the crown. And stacking hats on top of each other is a fast track to a misshapen brim you can't fix at home.

How to Display Cowboy Hats at Home
1. Use a rack that supports the crown.

5. Consider the room's humidity.
Felt hats do best in moderate humidity (40–60%). Extremely dry environments — like near a heating vent — can cause felt to crack or shrink. Straw hats are more forgiving but still shouldn't be stored in damp spaces.
How to Care for Felt Cowboy Hats
- Brush regularly. Use a soft-bristle hat brush and always brush counterclockwise (left to right when facing the hat) to follow the natural nap of the felt.
- Handle by the brim, not the crown. Oils from your fingers degrade felt over time. Get in the habit of gripping the front and back of the brim when putting the hat on or taking it off.
- Steam out dents. Hold the hat over a steaming kettle (carefully) and use your fingers to reshape the crown while the felt is warm and pliable. Let it cool on a flat surface or hat form.
- Spot-clean stains. Use a clean, dry cloth and a small amount of cornstarch on grease stains. Let it sit for a few hours, then brush away. Avoid water on felt — it can leave rings.
- Store off-season hats in a hat box. If you're rotating seasonal hats, a round hat box with tissue paper inside the crown is the gold standard for long-term storage.
How to Care for Straw Cowboy Hats
- Wipe with a damp cloth. Unlike felt, straw can handle a light wipe-down with a barely damp cloth to remove dust and sweat.
- Reshape with steam. Same technique as felt — steam softens straw enough to reshape a bent brim or dented crown.
- Avoid prolonged moisture. A little rain won't ruin a straw hat, but leaving it wet will cause it to warp. Shake off excess water and let it air dry on a hat rack — never in a bag or box while still damp.
- Condition the hatband. Leather hatbands benefit from a light application of leather conditioner once or twice a year to prevent cracking.
